Looks like the number one google search that gets people to this site is “workgroup manager add a application to the dock” or some variation of such. So, due to popular demand, here is a quick tutorial on how to add an application to the dock using WGM.
1. Connect to your directory system using Workgroup Manager. Remember, you typically connect using a “diradmin” account not your server admin.2. Select the user, group, computer, or computer list that you wish to manage their dock. For this example I chose the workgroup “3″
3. Select the Preference pane by clicking the button on the toolbar.
4. Click on the Dock icon, in the top right corner of the preferences pane. This opens to Dock Preferences for the workgroup. As with all preferences you are given the choice to manage this preference “Never, Once, and Always.” Once is a great way to add something to someone’s dock but allowing them to remove it if they don’t like/want it. Whereas “Always” will keep that item in the dock forever, not allowing the user to remove it.Next you have two fields: “Applications”, and “Documents and Folders.” The top application window lists the applications that are placed in that user’s dock. Note that iMovie HD has a generic icon, but Comic Life, GarageBand, and iPhoto all have application specific icons. That is because iMovie HD is not installed on the computer I am currently connected to the directory with, but the others are.
5. To add an application to the dock, simply press the plus sign next to the Applications field. This will lower a sheet that will allow you to navigate your computer and select the application you want to add. There are some ways around it, but typically you must have the application you wish to add to the dock installed on your computer when you add it to the preferences. Once it is added you no longer need it on your machine.6. Select the application you want to add, and click the add button.7. Finally, click “Apply Now” or “Done” button to save your changes. Now all users in that workgroup will have that app in their dock!
